The Fade Pattern
Remote attrition often looks like this:
- Fewer opinions in meetings
- Slower responses
- Less initiative
- A sudden resignation that “came out of nowhere”
It didn’t come out of nowhere. You just couldn’t see it.
The Real Cause
People leave when they can’t locate their future.
In a remote environment, future is communicated through small signals:
- Who gets pulled into the important room
- Who is asked for judgment
- Who receives context early
When those signals disappear, the best people assume the worst.
The Fix
Make progression legible:
- Explicit scopes
- Written expectations
- Public recognition of ownership
The Bottom Line
Remote work didn’t create disengagement.
It made it easier to hide.
